Tractor and mulching deck slashing a steep green paddock in the Illawarra

Mulching decks, not a conventional slasher

Slashing and Paddock Mulching in the Illawarra

We cut paddocks with a mulching deck rather than a standard slasher. The grass is chopped fine and spread evenly behind the tractor, so it breaks down into the soil instead of smothering the pasture in windrows.

Why this matters

Long Grass Costs More Than It Looks

A paddock that gets away from you is not just untidy. Rank grass shades out the pasture underneath, hides snakes, fallen timber and holes, and dries into a fuel load against your fences and sheds through summer. On the steep country around Jamberoo, Kangaroo Valley and the escarpment, most people simply cannot get on top of it with the gear they own.

The usual fix makes a second problem. A conventional slasher knocks the grass over and leaves it in heavy windrows. Those rows take months to break down, suffocate the grass beneath them and leave the paddock patchy. Cheap slashing is often slashing you pay for twice.

What we do

Cut Fine, Spread Even, Back Into the Soil

Broadlands Contracting cuts paddocks with mulching decks. The deck chops the grass finely and disperses it evenly behind the tractor, so there is nothing left in rows. The cut material breaks down quickly, returns nutrients to the soil and improves the pasture for grazing rather than sitting on top of it.

Our tractors are set up for the slopes this region is known for. Hillsides, gullies, dam walls and paddocks that look too steep to touch are the work we do most, and we tailor the cut height and frequency to what the paddock is for — grazing, hay, fire protection or simply keeping a lifestyle block looking cared for.

The cost of waiting

Paddocks Never Get Cheaper to Cut

Putting slashing off for another season, or getting a conventional slasher in, usually leads to:

  • Grass thickening to the point where it has to be cut twice, or cut slowly, which costs more
  • Heavy windrows from a standard slasher smothering the pasture you were trying to improve
  • Fuel loads building against fences, sheds and the house through the hottest part of the year
  • Weeds like fireweed, blackberry and lantana seeding into country that was still good pasture

Good Questions — Here's What to Know

What is the difference between slashing and mulching?

A conventional slasher knocks the grass over and leaves it lying in long windrows behind the tractor. A mulching deck chops the material finely and spreads it evenly, so it breaks down into the soil within weeks rather than months. The paddock looks cleaner, the pasture underneath keeps growing, and the nutrients go back into the ground.

How steep can you slash?

Steep country is our specialty. The hills around Jamberoo, Kiama, Kangaroo Valley and the Highlands escarpment are where most of our slashing happens, and our tractors are set up for them. If a section is genuinely unsafe we will tell you rather than put a machine on it.

How often should a paddock be slashed?

It depends on what the paddock is for and how fast it grows. Grazing country in this region often wants two or three cuts a year; lifestyle blocks kept tidy usually want more. We can quote a one-off cut or set up a schedule so it never gets away from you.

How much does slashing cost?

It comes down to the area, how long the grass is and how steep or awkward the ground is. That is why we look at the paddock before we quote — you get a fixed price based on what is actually there, not an hourly rate that drifts.

Do you slash fire breaks?

Yes. Fire breaks and asset protection zones around houses, sheds and boundaries are a big part of what we do before each summer. Mulching the grass low and spreading it fine takes the fuel load down without leaving rows to dry out.
