Logs cut into firewood lengths with a chainsaw on a rural property in the Southern Highlands

Turn fallen timber into next winter

Firewood Harvesting in the Southern Highlands

Dead standing trees, storm-fall and the pile of logs behind the shed cut into firewood lengths and split and piled where you want it — so the timber on your place heats your house instead of rotting in the paddock.

Why this matters

Good Firewood Is Lying in Your Paddock

Highlands winters are cold and firewood is expensive, yet most rural properties around Bowral, Moss Vale, Bundanoon and Kangaroo Valley have more timber on the ground than they could burn in years. Storm-fall, dead standing trees and the leftovers of old clearing sit there taking up paddock, harbouring pests and carrying fire.

Dealing with it is heavy, slow work. A chainsaw and a weekend gets you a trailer load and a sore back, and the big logs that make the best firewood are the ones you cannot move. So it stays where it fell, season after season.

What we do

Cut, Split and Piled Where You Want It

Broadlands Contracting harvests firewood from the timber already on your property. We fell dead standing trees where it is safe to do so, cut fallen timber and storm damage into firewood lengths, split it and pile it where you want it — by the house, under cover, or left in rounds to season.

With the tractor on site we can shift logs that would otherwise never move, clean up the branches and smaller material by mulching, and leave the paddock clear and usable. It is often done alongside slashing or tree pruning so you are only paying for one visit.

How the job runs

From Fallen Timber to a Piled Woodpile

A straightforward process so you know what is being cut and where it ends up.

  1. We look at the timber

We walk the property, see what is dead, fallen or in the way, and work out what makes good firewood and what is better mulched or left for habitat.

  2. We cut and split

Timber is felled or bucked, cut into firewood lengths that suit your fire and split ready to season. Larger logs are moved with the tractor.

  3. We pile and tidy up

The firewood is piled where you want it and the branches and offcuts are mulched or cleared so the paddock is left clean.

The cost of leaving it

Timber Left Lying Only Gets Worse

Leaving dead and fallen timber in the paddock, or burning it off, usually means:

  • Buying firewood every winter while better timber rots on your own place
  • Fuel loads sitting through the middle of the property ahead of the fire season
  • Pest animals and snakes using the log piles as harbour near the house
  • Burn-off permits, smoke complaints and escape risk every time you try to clear it

Good Questions — Here's What to Know

Do you sell firewood or only harvest what is on my property?

Our service is harvesting the timber already on your land and processing it for you. Get in touch if you are after supply and we will let you know what is available.

Can you fell dead standing trees?

Yes, where it can be done safely from the ground and clear of buildings and powerlines. Dead trees close to the house or over services are rigging work for an arborist, and we will tell you when a tree falls into that category.

Is harvesting fallen timber on my property allowed?

Collecting fallen and dead timber on your own land for your own use is generally fine, but native vegetation rules in NSW can apply to felling and to habitat trees. We work within them and will flag anything that looks like it needs approval.

How long does the firewood need to season?

Freshly cut hardwood generally wants a summer under cover before it burns well — around six to twelve months depending on the species and how it is piled. We can leave it in rounds or split it so it dries faster.
