Why this matters

Lantana and Blackberry Come Back If You Only Cut Them

Lantana and blackberry are declared weeds across the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands, and they are the two that take over gullies, creek lines and back paddocks fastest. Once a thicket is established, stock cannot get through it, the pasture underneath is gone and the seed spreads to every neighbour downhill.

Most clearing methods only deal with the top. A slasher, a forestry mulcher on a positrack or a tractor slasher all grind the plant down to ground level — but the roots and the base of the stem are left in the ground, damaged but alive, and the whole thicket reshoots within a season. One machine pass on its own is rarely enough.

What we do

A Clear-Out, Then a Plan to Keep It Down

Broadlands Contracting mulches invasive weeds with a tractor and mulcher, then builds a management plan around what is actually growing on your place. That means more of the standing thicket is cleared in the first pass than a slasher would take, and the mulch stays on the ground as cover rather than becoming a heap to burn.

Because lantana and blackberry have a long-lived seed bank, some regrowth is normal. The plan is tailored to the project — spot spraying, a second pass, or scheduled checks — so new growth is caught while it is still small and cheap to deal with, instead of waiting until it is a thicket again.

How the job runs

Clear It, Then Manage What Comes Back

Weed work lasts when the first pass and the follow-up are planned together.

  1. We map the infestation

We work out how far the lantana or blackberry really runs — usually further than you can see from the house — and check what is growing underneath it worth keeping.

  2. We mulch the thicket

The tractor and mulcher work through the infestation and spread it as mulch where it stood. Nothing is burned or carted away.

  3. We set the management plan

Every project is different. We agree follow-up that suits the site — spot spray, another pass, or scheduled checks — so seedlings from the seed bank are dealt with before they become another thicket.

The cost of waiting

A Thicket Doubles While You Decide

Leaving lantana or blackberry to run, or just cutting the tops off, usually leads to:

  • Grazing country lost season by season as the thicket spreads out of the gullies
  • The whole infestation reshooting from intact roots within a year of being slashed
  • Serious fuel loads building in exactly the country that is hardest to defend in a fire
  • Biosecurity obligations going unmet on your land, and seed spreading to the neighbours

Good Questions — Here's What to Know

Will the lantana or blackberry grow back?

Some regrowth is normal because the seed bank can last for years. Mulching clears far more of the standing thicket than a surface slash, and the management plan is there to deal with what germinates afterwards — usually with spot spraying or a follow-up pass while plants are still small. We do not promise the weeds are gone for good after one visit.

How is this different from a forestry mulcher?

A slasher or a forestry mulcher on a positrack mostly knocks the growth down to ground level and leaves the base of the plant standing, which is why it reshoots. Our tractor and mulcher works through the thicket and mulches far more of the plant in the same pass. The lasting result still depends on follow-up, which is why every job gets a tailored management plan.

Can you get into steep gullies and creek lines?

Yes, and that is where most of the work is. Our tractors are set up for the slopes in this region. We will tell you if a section is beyond what can be done safely.

Am I legally required to control lantana and blackberry?

Both are priority weeds under the NSW Biosecurity Act and landholders have a general duty to prevent their spread. What that means in practice depends on your local council and regional weed plan — your council weeds officer can tell you, and we are happy to work in with them.
