Why this matters

Weeds Outgrow Everything You Planted

Blackberry, lantana and wattle regrowth are the three weeds that quietly take paddocks in this region. They start in a gully or along a fence line, and within a few seasons stock cannot get through, the pasture underneath is gone and the seed bank is set for the next decade.

Lawns have the same problem on a smaller scale. Bindii, clover and cudweed move in wherever the turf thins out, and once they have seeded, mowing alone will never get rid of them. Spraying the wrong product, or the right product at the wrong time, wastes money and knocks the grass back as well.

What we do

The Right Product, Applied at the Right Time

Broadlands Contracting runs a selective range of sprays targeting noxious woody weeds — lantana, blackberry and wattle — and lawn weeds including bindii, clover and cudweed. We are qualified horticulturalists, so the product, rate and timing are chosen for the weed and the season rather than a one-size blanket spray.

For paddocks and bush edges we spray from the ute-mounted unit, which reaches into the gullies and slopes where the worst infestations sit. For lawns and gardens we use calibrated equipment that treats the weeds and leaves the turf alone. Other specialty sprays are available by request, and spraying pairs well with our mulching work on larger infestations.

How the job runs

Treated Properly, Not Just Sprayed

Spraying works when it is planned. Here is how we approach it.

  1. We identify what is growing

We walk the property, identify the weed species and work out how far they run, including the gullies and edges that are easy to miss.

  2. We pick the product and the timing

Selective herbicide matched to the weed, applied in the window when it is actively growing and will take the chemical up. Weather and wind are checked on the day.

  3. We spray and advise on follow-up

Woody weeds and lawn weeds often need a second visit as the seed bank germinates. We tell you honestly what to expect and when a follow-up makes sense.

The cost of waiting

Every Season the Seed Bank Gets Bigger

Leaving weeds to run, or hitting them with the wrong product, usually means:

  • Blackberry and lantana thickets spreading out of gullies and across grazing country
  • Noxious weed obligations going unmet on your land under NSW biosecurity rules
  • Lawn weeds seeding into turf every spring until the grass is more weed than lawn
  • Money spent on blanket sprays that damage the pasture and leave the target weed standing

Good Questions — Here's What to Know

What weeds do you spray?

Our core range targets noxious woody weeds — lantana, blackberry and wattle — and lawn weeds including bindii, clover and cudweed. Other specialty sprays, including for fireweed and thistles, are available by request. Tell us what you are dealing with and we will tell you what will work.

Is the spraying safe around pets, stock and gardens?

We use selective products chosen for the target weed and follow the label withholding periods, which we go through with you before spraying. Stock and pets are kept off treated areas for the period the label requires, and we do not spray in wind that would carry drift onto gardens or neighbours.

When is the best time of year to spray?

When the weed is actively growing and taking up moisture, which for most woody weeds in this region is spring through early autumn. Lawn weeds like bindii are best hit in winter and early spring before they seed. We time the visit to the weed, not the calendar.

Will one spray get rid of it?

For established blackberry and lantana, rarely. Spraying knocks the standing plants but the seed bank keeps germinating for several seasons, so a follow-up spray or two is normal. For lawn weeds a single well-timed treatment often does the job. We are upfront about which you are looking at.
