Why this matters

A Bad Cut Stays With the Tree for Years

Trees in this region grow fast, and left alone they end up over roofs, through powerline clearances, shading out gardens and dropping deadwood across driveways. The temptation is to get up a ladder with a saw, or hire whoever is cheapest, and take off whatever is in the way.

The tree remembers. Lopping and flush cuts open the tree to decay, encourage weak regrowth that fails in the next storm, and ruin the shape permanently. Hedges cut hard at the wrong time of year go brown and take seasons to recover, if they do at all.

What we do

Pruned by Horticulturalists, Not Loppers

Broadlands Contracting prunes trees and hedges across the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands. We are qualified horticulturalists, so each cut is made at the right point and the right time of year for the species — crown lifting for clearance, thinning for light and wind, deadwood removal for safety, and formative pruning on young trees so they grow into a sound shape.

Hedges are shaped with proper hedging equipment and cut on a schedule that keeps them dense rather than hacked back once they have got away. On rural properties we also handle felling of smaller trees and storm-damaged timber, and the material can be chipped, mulched or cut for firewood rather than left in a heap.

How the job runs

Tidy Trees and a Clean Yard Afterwards

Good pruning is planned before anything is cut. Here is how we go about it.

  1. We assess the tree and the goal

Clearance, light, shape, safety or health — we look at what you need and how the species will respond, then explain what should and should not come off.

  2. We prune to the right points

Cuts are made at the branch collar and sized so the tree can close over them. Hedges are shaped to keep them full from the base up.

  3. We clean up completely

Branches are chipped, mulched or cut into firewood as you prefer, and the area is raked and blown off so nothing is left for you to deal with.

Overgrown Trees Fail in the Next Storm

Leaving trees and hedges to grow unchecked, or having them lopped badly, tends to mean:

  • Limbs over the roof, driveway and powerlines coming down in the next southerly
  • Decay entering through flush cuts and tearing wounds from rough lopping
  • Hedges gone leggy and brown that cannot be brought back without replanting
  • Gardens and lawns shaded out and struggling under a canopy that was never thinned

Good Questions — Here's What to Know

Do I need council approval to prune a tree?

For routine pruning of less than about ten percent of the canopy, usually not, but each council in the region has its own tree preservation rules and some species are protected. We will tell you if a job looks like it needs a permit. Obtaining it stays with the property owner.

When is the best time to prune?

It depends on the species. Many deciduous trees prune best in winter, flowering natives after they finish flowering, and hedges little and often through the growing season. We time the work to the plant rather than doing everything in one visit if that would harm it.

Do you remove trees as well as prune them?

We fell smaller trees and storm-damaged timber on rural properties where it can be done safely from the ground. Large removals directly over houses or powerlines are arborist rigging work, and we will tell you when a job falls into that category.

What happens to the branches and cuttings?

Your call. We can chip or mulch them on site as garden mulch, cut larger timber for firewood, or take the green waste away. We agree that before we start so the yard ends up the way you expect.
